The Future of Los Angeles Is Being Built Right Now
The future of Los Angeles is being built right now, and I believe small businesses deserve a seat at the table.
On Thursday, October 22, 2026, I'll be attending the Compete4LA Prime Contractor & Subcontractor Matchmaking Event at the Los Angeles Convention Center, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
My purpose is straightforward: connect with prime contractors, understand upcoming subcontracting opportunities, develop strategic partnerships, and explore how Ventry Group can contribute to some of the most significant construction, workforce, and economic development initiatives taking place in our city.
This isn't simply another networking event on my calendar. It's an opportunity to understand how major procurement decisions are made, identify where our services can deliver value, and help position small businesses to participate in Los Angeles's evolving economic landscape.
As a business consultant, entrepreneur, and workforce development advocate, I understand that access to opportunity often begins with access to the right people, information, and relationships. And that's precisely why I'll be there.
Los Angeles Is Building More Than Infrastructure
The Los Angeles Convention Center Expansion project represents much more than a construction initiative.
Projects of this magnitude create an ecosystem of business opportunities involving contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, workforce development organizations, technology companies, staffing firms, marketing agencies, and professional services providers.
While the physical infrastructure receives most of the public attention, countless businesses are needed behind the scenes to support planning, workforce coordination, communications, operational efficiency, and successful project execution.
For organizations like Ventry Group, that creates an important opportunity to contribute beyond traditional construction services. Our focus is on identifying where human capital, operational consulting, and technology can support organizations delivering these projects.
I also recognize that participating in major projects requires preparation, persistence, and a genuine understanding of procurement requirements. Simply attending an event doesn't guarantee a contract. However, being present, asking intelligent questions, and building meaningful connections can create the foundation for future opportunities.
My goal isn't just to meet people. It's to build relationships that eventually produce measurable business outcomes.
Connecting Directly With Prime Contractors
One of the primary reasons I'm attending Compete4LA is the opportunity to connect directly with established prime contractors and organizations associated with the convention center expansion.
The event highlights several participating organizations, including PCL Construction, Webcor, Letner Roofing Co., BALI Construction, COSCO Fire Protection, Martin Bros., DARTON GROUP, OTIS, BAPKO Metal, and Murray Company Mechanical Contractors.
These organizations represent different disciplines throughout the construction and infrastructure ecosystem. I want to learn how their subcontractor networks operate, what purchasing decisions are made at the project level, and how qualified small businesses can position themselves for consideration.
Some of my most important questions will focus on upcoming procurement packages, vendor qualification requirements, subcontracting tiers, and the professional services these organizations may need. I'm especially interested in understanding whether there are opportunities involving recruiting, workforce planning, administrative support, digital communications, business process improvement, and technology integration.
Equally important, I want to identify the individuals responsible for supplier diversity, business development, procurement, and subcontractor engagement. The right introduction can open a conversation. Demonstrated capability, reliability, and consistent follow-through are what turn that conversation into a business relationship.
How Ventry Group Can Support Prime Contractors
At Ventry Group & Associates, our business model focuses on helping organizations grow, attract talent, improve business operations, and implement technology that increases productivity. We work across multiple service areas, creating opportunities to support both established companies and growing enterprises.
Executive Recruiting and Staffing: Large-scale projects depend on qualified professionals who can manage operations, coordinate teams, support compliance, and keep projects moving. Through Ventry Staffing, we focus on executive recruiting, direct-hire placement, administrative staffing, professional recruiting, and workforce solutions. For construction-related organizations, potential areas of support could include human resources, accounting, administrative operations, project coordination, and leadership recruitment, depending on project requirements and our ability to meet them.
Fractional Consulting and Business Development: Not every organization needs another full-time executive. Sometimes, businesses need experienced leadership and specialized consulting support to improve operations, strengthen business development, and execute growth strategies. Our fractional consulting approach allows organizations to access strategic expertise without automatically committing to a permanent leadership position. I'm interested in exploring where this model can support subcontractors and suppliers preparing for growth.
Artificial Intelligence and Business Automation: Through Ventry AI, we're developing practical solutions that help organizations improve customer engagement, automate administrative processes, coordinate appointments, manage leads, and strengthen internal workflows. AI is not a replacement for qualified construction professionals or responsible project oversight. However, well-designed automation can help reduce repetitive administrative work, improve response times, and allow teams to focus on higher-value responsibilities. Potential applications include vendor onboarding workflows, incoming inquiry management, automated follow-ups, CRM management, and business reporting. Every implementation should be evaluated against the organization's security, contractual, and operational requirements.
Media, Marketing, and Communications: Ventry Media supports business visibility, digital marketing, website development, content strategy, and business communications. Construction companies and subcontractors also need effective ways to communicate their capabilities, attract talent, highlight completed projects, and position themselves for future opportunities. Strong visibility is not a substitute for performance, but it can help qualified businesses communicate their value more effectively.
Learning How the Subcontracting Ecosystem Works
A major priority during this event will be understanding how subcontracting opportunities are structured.
Many entrepreneurs are familiar with selling directly to customers. Working with major prime contractors introduces additional layers of qualification, documentation, insurance, procurement processes, and project delivery expectations.
I intend to learn more about the distinctions between prime contractors, first-tier subcontractors, and lower-tier suppliers. I also want to understand which professional service categories are eligible for consideration, how vendors receive bid notifications, and what steps businesses must complete before becoming qualified suppliers.
For example, can a professional recruiting firm support the staffing needs of a participating subcontractor? Could an AI consulting company streamline business processes for a construction supplier? Can a media company support recruitment campaigns, public communications, or digital outreach?
Those opportunities should never be assumed. They must be validated directly with the appropriate purchasing and project representatives. My approach is to ask the questions, understand the requirements, and determine where Ventry Group can deliver meaningful value.
Small Business Participation Must Be Intentional
One of the most encouraging aspects of the Compete4LA event is its emphasis on connecting small, local, and diverse businesses with major project participants.
The event is hosted by the Los Angeles Business Council Institute and the PCL Webcor Joint Venture, with a network of program partners supporting business engagement. Organizations identified in the event announcement include the City of Los Angeles Mayor's Office of Small Business Engagement, the County of Los Angeles Department of Economic Opportunity, and several other business and industry partners.
These relationships matter. Small businesses frequently face challenges accessing procurement opportunities, understanding qualification requirements, and developing relationships with larger organizations. Programs that create opportunities for direct conversations with prime contractors can help address these barriers.
However, I believe businesses must also take responsibility for becoming procurement-ready. That means having current capability statements, professional websites, clear service offerings, financial discipline, appropriate licenses or certifications where required, and the operational capacity to perform.
The objective should not be simply to obtain an introduction. It should be to become a reliable, competitive, and valuable business partner.
Building Strategic Partnerships Beyond Ventry Group
My participation is also connected to a broader vision of helping other entrepreneurs gain access to business opportunities.
Throughout my career, I've worked with businesses, workforce professionals, entrepreneurs, and community organizations. One lesson has remained consistent: collaboration can expand what businesses are capable of accomplishing.
A staffing firm may have strong workforce relationships but limited marketing capabilities. A construction supplier may have technical expertise but need improved administrative systems. A technology company may develop powerful software but lack relationships within a particular industry.
Through strategic partnerships, these organizations can identify complementary strengths and potentially pursue opportunities that would be difficult to execute independently. I plan to explore relationships with subcontractors, professional service providers, business associations, and organizations that share this collaborative mindset.
My intention is to understand not only what Ventry Group can contribute but also where qualified partners can work together. Successful partnerships require clearly defined responsibilities, transparent agreements, and a shared commitment to delivering results. That is the standard I want to establish.
Workforce Development Is Part of the Bigger Picture
Beyond my commercial interests, workforce development is a major part of my mission.
As the founder of The Gentleman Society, a nonprofit focused on youth mentorship and career readiness, I believe young people need greater exposure to the industries and professionals shaping their communities.
When major development projects move forward in Los Angeles, we should also consider how young people can learn about the careers associated with those projects. Construction and infrastructure development involve far more than the skilled trades alone. Career pathways can extend into project management, finance, engineering, human resources, technology, procurement, safety, and entrepreneurship.
I want to explore how relationships developed through these industry events might eventually support career awareness, employer engagement, mentorship, internships, and other workforce readiness initiatives. These would be exploratory conversations, not existing commitments from participating contractors. But the possibility is worth pursuing.
Our young people should be able to look at major projects in their own city and see potential career pathways, not just construction sites.
My Strategy for October 22
I don't intend to walk into the Los Angeles Convention Center simply collecting business cards. I'm approaching the event with a defined business development strategy.
First, I want to identify prime contractors and subcontractors whose operational needs align with Ventry Group's capabilities.
Second, I plan to meet procurement professionals, supplier diversity representatives, and business development leaders who can explain their organizations' qualification processes.
Third, I'll ask about anticipated opportunities, registration requirements, and the appropriate channels for submitting capability statements.
Fourth, I intend to identify potential teaming partners who offer complementary capabilities.
Finally, I plan to establish a disciplined follow-up process for the most relevant conversations. That includes organizing contacts, documenting potential opportunities, scheduling discovery meetings, and determining whether there is a credible path toward a future business relationship.
Through our CRM and AI-enabled follow-up processes, we can organize qualified business leads and manage next steps while respecting contact preferences and applicable outreach requirements. For me, the event's success will not be measured by how many business cards I collect. It will be measured by the quality of relationships established and the actionable opportunities identified.
The Future Belongs to Businesses That Prepare
Los Angeles continues to create opportunities for companies capable of serving complex projects and growing industries. But opportunity alone is not enough.
Businesses must demonstrate that they understand customer needs, possess the required qualifications, and can deliver consistent results. That is especially important when pursuing relationships with major prime contractors.
My commitment is to continue learning, building relationships, developing capabilities, and positioning Ventry Group as a trusted resource for business growth, talent solutions, and operational innovation.
I also want to encourage other small business owners to pursue these opportunities with a long-term mindset. Attend industry events. Meet purchasing professionals. Understand certification and qualification requirements. Build genuine partnerships. Follow through.
There is no shortcut around credibility.
Let's Build Los Angeles Together
On October 22, I'll be at the Los Angeles Convention Center with an open mind, a clear business strategy, and a strong interest in meaningful partnerships.
I'm looking forward to meeting prime contractors, subcontractors, procurement leaders, entrepreneurs, and organizations committed to expanding economic opportunity throughout Los Angeles.
If your organization is involved in the Los Angeles Convention Center expansion, supports major infrastructure projects, or is seeking strategic partners in staffing, fractional consulting, AI automation, or business development, I'd welcome the opportunity to connect.
At Ventry Group, we believe growth happens when relationships, talent, technology, and execution come together. And as Los Angeles continues to build its future, I intend to be part of the conversation.
Because the most important question isn't simply who is building Los Angeles. It's how we can work together to help build it better.
